Our scanner
If you saw LocalPresenceScanner in your server logs, someone asked PresenceScope to audit your website. This page explains what it does.
What it is
PresenceScope produces automated reports on how a local business website presents itself — page titles, contact details, structured data, security headers and similar public signals. The scanner fetches a website only when a person submits it for a scan. It does not crawl the web on its own, and it does not index or republish your content.
How to recognise it
Requests carry a user agent beginning with LocalPresenceScanner/1.0 and a link to this page. Scans run on our hosting provider’s infrastructure, so there is no fixed list of IP addresses to rely on.
What it fetches
- The submitted homepage and up to 8 pages in total, within a time budget of about 45 seconds per scan.
- A few lightweight checks:
/robots.txt, the XML sitemap, one deliberately non-existent address to test your 404 page, the plain-HTTP version of the site, and HEAD requests to confirm that a sample of links and assets resolve. - At most a few requests at a time, with a delay between requests to the same host. It does not run JavaScript, sign in, submit forms or access private network addresses.
Controlling it with robots.txt
The scanner reads your robots.txt and will not open additional pages that are disallowed for LocalPresenceScanner (or for *). For example:
User-agent: LocalPresenceScanner Disallow: /private/
The homepage and the lightweight checks above are always made, because they are what the person requesting the scan asked us to assess.
Questions or opt-out requests
If you own a website and want it excluded from scans, or believe the scanner misbehaved, email info@presencescope.com with the domain and, if possible, the time of the requests. We will look into it.
